Axial shaft seals that turn with the shaft

A v-ring is an elastomer shaft seal that grips the shaft and turns with it. The angled lip runs lightly preloaded against a flat counterface and seals axially, rather than radially the way a classic lip seal does. That difference decides where it belongs.

Because the ring turns with the shaft, at higher speeds it also works as a slinger: dirt, splash water and dust are thrown outwards before they reach the lip. Friction stays low because lip pressure is slight, and the ring tolerates clearance, misalignment and axial shaft movement far better than a lip seal does.

In practice a v-ring usually sits ahead of the bearing itself or ahead of a lip seal, as a primary seal that keeps the heavy dirt out. Choose on shaft diameter, since the ring is stretched over the shaft on assembly and holds itself in place that way. Look at the design as well, because the VA and VE forms differ in cross section and in the shaft diameter range they cover.
